Bowie, Dr. William
Dr. William Bowie is a senior faculty member in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of British Columbia, where he has been affiliated with UBC and Vancouver General Hospital since 1977. His work is driven by a longstanding commitment to advancing the understanding, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, shaped by an early recognition of the role social and environmental factors play in health. As the first Infectious Diseases physician in the UBC Department of Medicine, he helped build a collaborative foundation that bridges clinical care, microbiology, public health and research, with a focus on sexually transmitted infections and antimicrobial resistance. His contributions span laboratory research, clinical studies and leadership with national and international partners, as well as public health responses from outbreak management to the development of programs in HIV, tuberculosis and vaccination. Across decades of change—from emerging pathogens to rising antimicrobial resistance—he has remained a strong advocate for evidence-based care, health equity and the role of science in policy and practice. Through his teaching and mentorship, he supports learners to approach complex health challenges with curiosity, compassion and a commitment to improving health outcomes in British Columbia and around the world.
